Broken nose healing time

Nasal fracture is the same as any other fracture of any bone in our bodies. Because of that broken nose recovery might take just about the same amount of time as it takes anywhere else to treat.

In case only cartilage (usually nose septum) is broken or cracked, healing takes less time.

Broken nose recovery time depends on individual healing features of a person, the previous injuries and the degree of freshly suffered injury.

Small nose crack gives pretty little discomfort and sometimes, if the shape of the nose is not shifted, person might not even notice his or her bone crack. Pain, bruising and swelling will slowly fade away in few weeks not causing many problems.

Larger nasal fracture might cause stronger bleeding and more intensive pain, bruising and swelling. Such injury usually fades away in a longer period of time and no special treatment is needed except that of stopping the nosebleed.

Hardly deviated nose after the hit is the worst scenario, though it is usually treatable without nose surgery. If the bone is not totally smashed, doctor can restore nose shape to its' previous place with local anesthetics and sometimes apply packing over. Else, surgery is needed (more about: Nose job recovery time). Shortly: it takes about 2 weeks until a person can go back to normal activities (except sports and physical work) and less than a year for full nose recovery.

Broken nose healing time cannot be predicted very accurately. It is better to link your energy towards avoiding any accidents with your nose during healing time.

The time amount needed to come back to sports which include increased risk of a broken nose is usually told to be about 6 weeks after rhinoplasty surgery. It seems only 4 weeks left for you.
This period of time might increase or decrease. It depends on the complexity of surgery taken.
The doctor operated you must know the time needed for you personally more precise. So it's a good idea to make a call to him right now to completely satisfy your question.

Ok I broke my nose on august 28, and I tried to look around to find some help on getting money to pay the doctors but I don't have it. My insurance doesn't kick in until Oct. 1! Will it still be ok to get it fix then or will it be too late? And if you have a place or website I can get where it would help for finances I would appericate if you could tell me!

Dear Thomas,

I'm sorry for what has happened.
It might be too late to simply fix your nose after 1 month (If your nose is misshapen it will heal in that shape and only rebreaking it or nose surgery will help).

Also I can't see your state and I'm not a doctor. If your nose is not misshapen and is just swollen a bit you might not need any treatment at all.

I got my nose broken in 3 years ago because I got sucker punched in gym. It was very swollen and bad but I did not need to have surgery. Last Friday I went to a haunted house and I ran into a wall( pretty dumb I know) and hit my nose really hard. It started bleeding a lot for about 5 or 10 minutes then it stopped. It also was swollen but now it is ok but I do feel a little bit of pain on the left side in a spot. Do you think I broke it or fractured it? The only thing I am afraid of is that my right nostril feels stuffy now but I do not know if it's because of that or because I am feeling a little bit under the weather. Any advice?

My 16-year old son broke his nose playing soccer, saw the doctor right after, had x-rays and the nose specialist will see him in 4 days (after swelling goes down) to realign it. Can you tell me how much healing time it will take thereafter before he can start to play soccer or hockey again? I don't want the coach to decide for me.

I had my nose bone broken 13 weeks ago, the bottom of the actual bone in the nose broke and went behind the rest of the bone - luckily the swelling had brought the bone back up but i was left with a very bent nose, after 6 days i went and had my nose reset under local anesthetic. My nose is now pretty straight, however it still aches occasionally and is a bit sore to touch and the ceptum inside is slightly lobsided. most frustratingly my nose gets blocked very easily one one side and i have limited air flow most of the time and as an asthmatic this is annoying.

is this normal and if not what can i do? any response owuld be greatly apprieated!

hi there i broke my nose i am waiteing for the xray to come back to tell me how bad it is i can move my nose around but on the bone part on the top when i tap it i hear a clicking noise could that be where it is broken i can move it around and it dose not hurt that much it is swollan and i have 2 black eyes its not croked i dont think just look like it from being swollan.. Somebody punch my noose. I bleed for 10 minutes. That same day, I move the nose bymyself into the right position.
Next day, my eyes were brown, my nose was big and so on. But i felt less pain.
Im taking some medicaments to swollen the pain.
Do you think it can be a broken nose? or could it be something less grave?

Hey, i broke my nose last night in a club when a bouncer sucker punched me. Got a bit of swelling going purple spreading to my eyes, so lovely bruising on the way. Iv never broke it before so its an experience, im a boxer so luckily i was able to correct the allignment with a mirror last night, as iv helped others with broken nose's before. Numbish dull pain on the bridge of the nose, make sure u have clear nasal passages tho or cud cause problems. Ill update here when its healed wiv a time scale.(minor fracture displaced to the side)

on friday my horse hit me in the nose after he fell while jumping. A&E said just to ice it and not to blow it. I went back to work today and it was clicking occasionally when I walk but doesn't hurt could it be broken?

Hi, I broke my nose in two places about 11 months ago playing football with my nephews. Then I broke it again 6 months later shopping for dog food when cans fell in a 6 pack off the top shelf into my face. My nose hurts constantly and is swollen down the sides and has a bump on the top and inside of it is swollen making breathing hard. If I take Advil Cold and Sinus it shrinks the internal swelling a lot and it makes my whole face feel better (less pressure feeling) and breathing is easy again so it must still be so swollen I imagine since the Advil Cold and Sinus helps me breath normally again while it is working. So - why still so swollen this long and also if I try to gently or deeply massage it I hear fluid in the tissues and feel it in the tissues. I've good insurance and need a Dr but have no idea who to see - any suggestions in Redmond area - or I can drive to Bellevue or Seattle WA too. It is so painful and gives me headaches too. With both breaks I got bad concussions as well that went into concussion syndromes with headaches and sleeping 23 hours a day. HELP - this pain is nauseating.

I broke my nose when an ATV flipped on top of me. I don't think it was too bad -no one did anything about it when I was in the hospital. I have broken my nose on sep 16th, and it got swollen and little misplaced between my eyes. the swollen was got on sep 20th. But i didnt see a doctor for its very expensive for a student like me having my insurance expired just a week ago. My 9 year old daughter broke her nose on July 27th. It was extremely swollen and she ended up with 2 black eyes. It seems that she still has a little swelling on the bottom 2/3 of her nose (from bridge to tip). My question is...She still has dark circles under her eyes almost 2 months later. They are grayish/brownish if I had to pick a color. It is worse under the right eye which was the more swollen one, but there is also a smaller band under the left eye. Will these circles go away? I work with female football team and one of my players has fractured her nose. She is due to go back to the dr in 10days to get it put back into place. How long before she can start training and playing? Can she play before the 10days, just with no heading? Or do we have to wait for normal fractured healing time - e.g. 6 weeks?

Hi, last night late night I got up after being a sleep and ran into the corner of the wall hard and nose first. I think I may have blacked out for a second. I thought for when I stood up my nose was going to be bleeding, it wasn't. I have a friend that broke their nose around three weeks ago..had the pain and swelling and black eyes early on and than it seemed to be getting better...than just in the last day has had major swelling, pain, and headaches. They haven't done anything to have rebroken it. Is this normal it sure doesn't sound like it to me.

If you have a broken nose or are recovering from surgery, wearing glasses can be a problem for a while because of the pressure on the nose.

my boyfriend got sucker punched in the nose the other night and his right eye immediately swelled up. there is like no definition on the right side of his face it is so swollen and this happened friday morning and it is now saturday. This morning he woke up and its more purple but still swollen. He is pretty sure his nose is broke because he could move it around and it was making a cracking sound and blood was pouring out but it looks completely straight to me? From reading these comments it seems to me that the swelling shall be gone within 4 days but he wont go to the doctor because he doesnt have insurance. When he got punched it was from the side so he wasnt hit in the nose dead center so maybe the bone on the side of his nose is broken. His other eye has very slight brusing thats barely noticeable. I broke my nose in Aug, 2010 when a hay buggy with a large round bale (2000 lbs +) of hay on it came off the hitch on my pickup truck. It hit me only in the nose. I had to go to two ERs since I take Plavix, Warfarin, and Aspirin daily. I had surgery on my nose in Sept, 2010. The surgeon told me that "he had never seen a nose like mine" and that he "had remove hundreds of slivers" during the surgery. However, I have had no sense of smell nor taste since. I have actually lost interest in eating and only eat when my stomach lets me know I should. Is there any hope in recovering my sense of smell and taste/ I have lost 30 lbs since then. Thanks

I am so worried that my nose wont heal/go back to 'normal' because as a child I had so many breaks I had a nasty mangled nose (never got treatment for any of the breaks). I did get it fixed at the age of 15, and while it wasnt a 'barbie nose', it was perfect for me. I now have a new lump, if I look at it one side the bump is more prominent, but I iced the hell out of it for that day, and two following it. Saw a dr. today (ear, nose, throat), but if in another week if the swelling is down enough to show 'new damage' can he 're-break/re-shape' it? I am having worse post-nasal drip and the Dr. said my body is taking care of it well, but I'm so worried- can an ear, nose, throat specialist 're-align' the cartilage? This is a nightmare!

I just had surgery to repair a deviated septum two weeks ago, and since the surgery, a bump has shown up on the bridge of my nose. The bump looks like a pimple or blackhead, but feels like solid bone and is def under the skin. I have a follow up appointment with my doctor in two weeks, what can he do to get rid of this thing?

I broke my nose around 2 years ago, it was clearly broken but I never went to hospital and it's healed up really well - no pain etc. But now I've become really self-concious about it because it is actually wonky and has a lump where I broke it. I never wanted to go to hospital because it didn't hurt and I was 14 (so not very bothered about my cosmetic appearance) but now I really want it straightened out and put back as close as possible to normal. i got a hit on my nose 4 years back.i was small at that time so didn't paid attention to it.i was playing cricket (i was batting)the ball hitted on the left side of the nose.so now my nose have a perfect shape on the right side but a little hump on the left side and top side.so it is due to ball hitting?when it hitted there was no bleeding at all.just a little swelling.so i consider it a nasal fracture?

yes, denisse. I broke my nose in sept last year and didn't get it fixed till may. The docs typically do not want to operate on a freshly broken nose.

I broke my nose playing soccer and I had to undergo surgery under local anesthesia. It was an emergency intervention to put it back into place, not a cosmetic one. Besides the swelling, it was rather painless. It was hard to tell how straight it was though. The doctor never cast my nose or gave me instructions to use tape to keep it straight. It's been two weeks, the swelling is down, but I start to notice a hump and the nose slightly curved to the right, where the fracture happened, right on the hump. I hear healing can take up from 6 moths to a year. doesn't look that bad now but the hump bothers me a bit, as well as the nose curved to the right. No one has noticed but I do feel it. No problem breathing.Should I use tape to correct the curvature? maybe apply small pressure sporadically so it heals straight over time. will iy help? I've read here some people applied pressure and things got worse. Should I leave it alone?

well this was back in 07' i got very drunk and this guy punched the hell out of my face and nose. i woke up the next with a black eye and nose was in pain. Though i never had my nose broken and thought "well if its broken i'll be bleeding non stop etc.." also i didn't want to tell my parents about this i just basically said i fell to the ground. So i'm wayyyy to late?? don't really trust Surgery. Other opinions please?? :/ can't break right in my left side of my nose, i remember breathing so much better back then.

Hi, my boyfriend got a deviated bone after a fight, we already went to the hospital and got it fix but the doctor put some time of cloth/cast in his nose there for not allowing him to breath through the nose only through mouth. We were both wondering if we can take it off sense it's only taped on basically or is it ok for him to only breath through his mouth for five days?! We do not find that to be ok and we would like to ASAP. Thank you!
