Nose Job Recovery Time

Rhinoplasty surgery recovery time might take up to one year, though after few weeks reshaped nose usually looks great and the patient can get back to his/her regular activities (except physical work or sports). Rhinoplasty recovery time is dependant. It is noticeable that intensity of post-operative treatment differs a lot at different stages. Feeling is not the same at first day and at the ending of the week. Step by step to full recovery and here you go: a new you.

Rhinoplasty recovery time depends on:

  • Procedure (surgery) complexity;
  • Individual features of the person;
  • Complications during surgery or post-operative time;
  • Smoking factor.

You will learn approximately how much time your nose recovery will take after visiting your surgeon.

Rhinoplasty recovery stages

Post-operative sleep. Pain after the nose plastic surgery might not let you sleep well. You should take painkillers surgeon has advised you. Other thing is the pose you should sleep. First week after nose reshaping, you should sleep on your back with your head raised. It helps to prevent bleeding and saves your nose from accidentally being squeezed. It also helps to minimize post-operative bruises and swelling.

Bruises and swelling around your eyes should fade away approximately at the end of the first recovery week. Bruising and swelling depends on nose surgery type (Open or closed surgery, broken nose bone). It also depends on patient's:

You can always ask your surgeon about how much time it will take to cure, though bruises and swelling after rhinopasty are inevitable.

Reducing bruising and swelling. To reduce both nose packing is being used, though not always. It's again depends on the type of nasal surgery and on doctors attitude to tapes. Taping is also possible at home. Tapes not only reduce bruising and swelling, its main purpose is to keep cartilage and bones tight in their place after surgery.

Another way to deal with it is icing. Use fruit, meat or whatever frozen bag. It makes a great deal, though some surgeons do not advice icing, so it's a good idea to ask first.

Stiff upper-lip - most surgeons say it is pretty common. This problem solves by it self in one or few weeks.

Other Tips and notices about recovery

  • Use painkillers. Use them if you were told to use it. Use it even if not. It is better to suppress pain before it reaches its highest intensity.
  • Don't use aspirin, ibuprofen, heparin, anti-inflammatories or any other medicament your rhinoplasty surgeon restricted. Stop using them two weeks before the plastic surgery and don't use it until you're allowed to.
  • Avoid using whatever containing vitamin E, ginseng - generally anything causing to bleed freely. Ask your doctor for more information about stuff to be avoided.
  • Save your nose from any accident hits. You don't want another surgery, do you?
  • Stop smoking few months before nose plastic surgery, and do not continue to do so during recovery time. It's a good reason to stop smoking. Smoking maximizes bruises and makes recovery time much much longer.
  • You shouldn't use any cosmetics until your doctor allows you to.
  • Do not exposure your nose to the sun after surgery since your skin then is very sensitive. Skin is much more sensitive to sunburns and should be covered with hat or any other thing.

Many things were noticed and I believe many were not. Please ask us a question or share your experiences, we highly appreciate your contribution.

Bena Sito  - Pressing on my nose cast   |2010-02-14 20:43:46
I just got my nasal surgery 1 week ago and my cast is not as stuck to my nose as it was the first day, which I understand why it wouldn't be. Because it is not as pressed against my nose, I find myself lightley pressing it because i am afraid my nose will be wider if i do not push it together, very lightley though. Is it bad to press on my cast ?
Anonymous   |2010-04-20 07:11:13
dont push my fren it only gets worst because i did that too and it only got worst.

I got my nose done 4 days ago (Alar trimming and nose lift with silicone)and the swelling in my bridge has subsided but my tip is still kinda big and it does not look pretty at all. The lower part of my nose is still pretty big. Hope this is still part of the swelling.

i did a nose job last month and my nose was not straight and after one month i still use tapes but i notice that it is still not straight at all!! i went to my doctor and he said its because it is swallon and when it goes my nose will get straight but i just cant believe that. is that normal???
jaimie  - ladies please   |2011-01-09 20:49:19
Hey! Stop pressing on your cast and for heavens sake DO NOT clean the inside of your nose. It is natural that it is swollen and difficult to breathe. Your doctor should have warned you about that being an issue. I just got mine done and all of the problems you are experiencing are normal! SO because careful, don't mess with it and just let it heal on it's own. Some people experience swelling for up to a year after surgery so don't panic if it's still kind of big, it will go down eventually there is nothing anyone can do. Eat healthy foods and get plenty of rest I hope everyone is happy with their end results :)

I broke my nose. Had surgery and just had the cast removed a week ago. My nose looked great the first day. I am now worried. On the right side there is still a "curve". I have a call into the Dr. office. I am hoping it is natural swelling that will go down over time.???? Is this typical? I REALLY would not like to get anything else done!
Anonymous  - beware   |2011-03-05 23:41:33
had my surgery at a very well respected doctor in my country. when i asked me for photos of patients or how my nose would look, he said he couldnt tell me and i had to trust him. after the cast ws removed my nose looked awful, but he said it is due to swelling. now my nose is awful, he cut too much of the front and even left a hole inside that affects my tonsils. Since so much time has passed i couldn't do anything to the doctor, which really pisses me off. I am planning to have surgery again to fix it, but now i am very very cautious. i want a surgeon that shows me previous patients, who tells me what to expect and gives me guarantees. They take our money, we must demand good results. So be very careful of choosing your doctor, it can save you years of trouble.

I'm getting worried now. My Op isn't until July. And 9 weeks later, I am going on holiday. I thought it would be plenty of time for healing. But after reading here. Some people still haven't healed and bruising still not gone down even after 3 months.

Anyone else had this problem?
Elena  - Nose Job   |2011-05-26 22:14:22
Had my nose done a week age...All swelling is gone and the bruising is almost gone...Got my cast off yesterday (day 6) and it looks a little big at the tip, but my doctor said that it is still swollen, and in 4-6 months I should have a 90% result of what my nose will look like. He said it takes about 6 months for the nose to settle and define itself. Overall, I love my nose but I will love it more when the tip swelling goes down. Tip: Sleep with your head elevated it really helps, use ice to prevent swelling..Day 2 and 3 were hell for me pain wise.

I'm just worried about how I am going to tell people at work because I'm going to look like a different person :/ any advise would be lovely please because I'm soo worried about what everyones going to think of me because they always gone on about how beautiful I look how I am now.

I had a nose job 1 month ago. I had the tip reshaped and a hump taken off. After the cast came off, it was very clear to me that my nose was not straight. I have taken pictures at every step of the recovery, and pictures show the curvature very clearly. My doctor said that it can take up to a year to heal completely and I shouldn't be concerned. I am really worried. If in a year, it still isn't straight, what kind of recourse do I have?

Gazel  - Rhinoplasty! Best thing I ever did.   |2011-08-07 07:04:05
I have just had a nose job. Its been 11days since the surgery. First 4 days after the surgery it was a really uncomfortable. Breathing through the nose and not being able to taste food was hard but on the fith day it didnt hurt so much and breathing was slowly coming back. One week later the cast and bandages came off. OMG my nose looked sooooo different. It looks absolutely gorgeous. Simple perfect for my face. Im very happy. I didnt have much brusing at all and swelling wasnt bad either. Its still very sensitive but thats normal. I highly reccomend this surgeon as he is amazing at what he does. My sister also had hers done with him and she too now has a beautiful natural looking nose. Let me know if anybody needs his details. :D

I'm actually thinking of doing a nose job as my nose shape has changed after doing a corrective jaw surgery as I had a VERY gummy smile. I would REALLY appreciate it if there could be some feedback on the process (eg: the pain, the swelling, the bruise near the eyes, the healing process, etc.) If anyone has had their nose done before, can you please explain the entire process and preparations that you all had, as well as the length of time the procedure took? :) Thank you! How mush is the cost of a nose job? I'm planning to increase the height of my nose bridge, and reduce the size of my nostrils. :) Gazel, would you please, if you do not mind, recommend to me your surgeon? Congratulations to you and your sister for both of your successful nose jobs! *hugs* As for Ashley, congratulations for starting college soon. I heard that it takes about 1-2 weeks of recovery, but again, it depends on an individual. For example, when I had my jaw surgery, it took about 3-4 weeks for swelling to subside, but mine took about 6 weeks, and about 4 months before I looked normal. So I take it that my body adjustment is slower. :P Good luck for your nose job and may you have a super SPEEDY recovery! :)

Hi, I had a surgery 3 weeks ago, but I am not happy with the result. I started sleeping mainly on my right side two weeks after the operation without consulting my doctor first, and now I can see that there is more swelling on my left side of the nose.Actually it looks like a curve. Is that because I didn`t sleep on my back for at least three weeks?
Ann  - Still disappointed after 4 months   |2011-08-12 14:15:35
I had my second nose surgery 4 months ago now. The first one was almost 20 years ago. The swelling for the first two months was horrendous! I have to say it looks a lot better now however the tip is still big every single morning when I wake up and even wider than my old nose. Then I massage it off and on throughout the day and finally around 2pm it looks narrower...yet still not the nose I was hoping for. My doctor told me second nose jobs take up to a year to completely heal so I'm trying to be patient but the bottom line is it's been a long time to have to wait for only half way decent results and this nose looks even wider than my old nose. Can someone post who is one year or so out and let me know if this will indeed get any better?

I got My ryhnoplatsy a month ago and quitting smoking is extremely important; I cant stress this enough! beginning again after a month caused my nose to swell up another 30% in the tip.. I had my splint taken off after a week and I had 70% of the swelling gone from great health. I had a really large nasal hump and large bulbous tip. After reading all of these it is obvious that everyone's healing time is different and you need to take your surgeons advice; I under estimated mine which was a big mistake. They are the best advice rather than strangers on the internet. As for the cost I turn 21 in 8 days and mine cost $11,000 - $12,000 however the actual surgeons fee was $7,000 and the rest was the anesthesia, surgery room and hospital stay. sometimes in life you need to step up and take the risk. I live in Canberra, Australia and had one of the best cosmetic surgeons (Dr Vladmir Milovich) I knew he was the one for me

I had a closed rhinoplasty done 10 days ago. The first week, as the cast was still I, I probably looked into the mirror and thought i'd be mr.piggy forever. The tip was turned up completely, but i was told not to worry. The day my cast came off, it went down half way. The rest will come down in days to come. I still have a bit of swelling mostly at the tip, but i'm going to give 20 more days, before heading back to the doctor's again. Bottom line is, Don't freak out the first few days. Your nose will look completely different without the cast! Good luck and make sure you choose your surgeon well.
Mr. Soccer  - No cast after surgery   |2011-11-11 15:24:24
I broke my nose playing soccer and I had to undergo surgery under local anesthesia. It was an emergency intervention to put it back into place, not a cosmetic one. Besides the swelling, it was rather painless. It was hard to tell how straight it was though. The doctor never cast my nose or gave me instructions to use tape to keep it straight. It's been two weeks, the swelling is down, but I start to notice a hump and the nose slightly curved to the right, where the fracture happened, right on the hump. I hear healing can take up from 6 moths to a year. doesn't look that bad now but the hump bothers me a bit, as well as the nose curved to the right. No one has noticed but I do feel it. No problem breathing.Should I use tape to correct the curvature? maybe apply small pressure sporadically so it heals straight over time will help? I've read some people applied pressure and things got worse. Or Should I leave it alone?
Softball_babe  - Great nose job   |2011-12-14 16:52:02
I just got my nose done two weeks ago and I have to say it looks great. The doctor I had really made it fit my face it's not like a tiny button nose (that would lol bad with my features) but it is a truly beautiful nose. It was swollen for about a week and when I got the cast taken off my nose was horribly rashes because I had an allergic reaction to the tape but that went away in about four days. It's only been two weeks so it's still swollen but that's normal and my doctor said the majority of the swelling will be gone after six weeks and all after a year. My nose used to be crooked but now it's straight the tip used to go down but now it goes up a tiny bit but It looks really natural not like a pigs nose the tip is still pretty swollen but gets nicer every day. I also had a bump removed but about a week after my surgery I felt a little bump form on the left side of my nose but my doctor said that's just a callous forming and swelling from where it was shaved and it's already going down. I would definitely recommend my doctor he showed me exactly what he was going to do and listened to my input while giving his own suggestions and now I gave a nose that truly fits my face. The surgery was simple and I wasn't in bad pain at all afterwards. The procedure was about 6,000 total including the anesthesiologist and the room and everything and they accept CareCredit so that's nice. For anyone about to get surgery research your doctor and make sure he has good credentials and look at the before and after pics. Taking off 1 week from work will be fine however take off 2 If you can to really let the swelling go down. Overall a nose job should make you happy and more confident and it's your face you want it to look great so go by the quality of the doctor not by price because if you go for something because it's cheap there's a good chance you'll end up having to spend outrageous amounts of money to get it corrected. I'd be happy to recommend my doctor to anyone :)

Im a freshman in highschool and my nose has been crooked since I was little. I want to get it straightened for my birthday that is coming up. Im planning on doing it over the summer to give it time to heal that's about three months iv read all the comments on here and it seems like the swelling and bruising would take longer. Does anyone think it would take longer than that? And softball babe could you maybe tell me your doctors name so I can do some research? And were is your doctor located? Thanks(:
